The iPhone 16 might not introduce a standout new feature, but Apple’s latest release is packed with thoughtful upgrades that subtly enhance everyday experiences. From the new Camera Control key to the Action button for customized shortcuts, and the upcoming notification summary in Apple Intelligence, these updates make daily interactions faster and less tedious.

Key Highlights of the iPhone 16’s New Buttons
The iPhone 16 introduces the Camera Control key, a combination button and touchpad. Pressing it opens the camera, tapping takes a photo, and holding it records a video. A lighter touch reveals a carousel of settings (e.g., exposure, zoom, and tone), making it easy to adjust camera settings without blocking your screen. While it takes some getting used to, it feels like a mini interface tailored for photography. Though similar camera shortcuts are found on other brands, Apple’s touchpad-style implementation makes setting adjustments seamless.

The iPhone 16's new Camera Control button.
Still, the most intriguing part of Camera Control, Visual Intelligence, arrives later this year. With it, users can point the camera at objects or locations for contextual information, like a restaurant's hours, with direct links to Google and ChatGPT for quick searches. This AI-centric feature hints at Apple’s broader vision for an AI-enhanced iPhone experience.

The iPhone 16 comes with the Action button, like last year's iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.
The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus also bring the Action button, first introduced on last year’s Pro models, allowing users to program a shortcut to various functions like turning on the flashlight or creating a voice memo. While it’s a great customization tool, I would love to see more multi-function gesture options, as available on the Apple Watch Ultra.
Updated Colors and Camera Enhancements

The iPhone 16's camera gets one key upgrade.
The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus retain last year’s design but introduce vibrant colors like pink, teal, and ultramarine, with a frosted glass back. Though the Dynamic Island and Action button now appear on the standard models, one “Pro” feature is still missing: an always-on display, which would be welcome for quick time and notification glances.
In terms of camera improvements, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus have an upgraded ultrawide camera with low-light capabilities, macro mode, and a 48-megapixel Fusion camera for 2x optical zoom. However, the standout is the new Photographic Styles feature, which now better detects skin tones, colors, highlights, and shadows, creating beautifully balanced photos. You can preview these styles before snapping a shot or add them afterward—a delightful touch for photography lovers.
